From time to time I plan to post updates on the progress of the facility. We hope the contractor will turn the building over to us next week. The video posted on this site explains concept, so this will make more sense if you view the video first. We are sending in work crews from across the state to help with the installation of the tanks, temperature\photoperiod controls, filters, recirculation systems, alarm systems, backup systems for power outages, etc. We have about one month to get the place ready for testing. I've attached a picture to give you an idea of what it will look like. We plan to bring the first brooders into the building on February 20th with the first fish leaving the facility on April 13th to be stocked at Hillsdale. Our plans right now are to stock early spawned advanced fry (about 1/2 inch long) at Hillsdale and early spawned fingerlings (1.0-1.5 inches long) at Cedar Bluff. If we have enough fish, we also want to stock Lovewell Reservoir. Lovewell is a fairly small reservoir with a very poor bass fishery and we feel that if we can establish a good year class at Lovewell it would be a major accomplishment. Meade will produce the fry, but some of the fry will be reared to fingerlings at the Farlington and Milford Hatcheries. Milford will also experiment with rearing to larger sizes in tanks instead of the normal pond rearing technique. So 3 of our 4 hatcheries will be directly involved and the Pratt Hatchery will support the others by picking up additional assignments that would have been handled at the other locations. We have a great crew and they are all working together to put this experimental project into action. <<< Picture Building12_19_2008_002small Here's a link to a video showing the construction work going at the new Meade Hatchery Bass Propagation Facility. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wEiGPo8WPY&eurl=http://kdwp.state.ks.us/KDWP-Info/KDWP-TV
